Collapse ▲Pleasing picky eaters can be a source of frustration for parents who are also juggling the demands of the holiday season. Getting children involved in meal preparation is a great bonding activity that will also instill healthy eating habits (and willingness to try new foods). There are many ways you can turn building healthy snacks into a fun activity for younger children.
If you’re looking for ways to keep your child interested in choosing healthy snacks over the holidays, you’ll find a few tips below to help:
- Snowman Snack Face – Use low fat cream cheese spread on a rice cake to create a snowman face. Then decorate the face using matchstick carrot pieces, raisins, or chocolate chips. You could also use pancakes as the base and various fruits to create a fun, holiday character.
- Holiday Themed Fruit Kabobs – Get creative using holiday colored fruits to creative festive fruit kabobs. For example, you can use green grapes or white bananas on a toothpick or small kabob and top it with a red strawberry for a festive holiday cap. Try making a healthy dip from honey, vanilla, and greek yogurt to top it off!
- Fruit & Veggie Wreath Snack – Create a wreath on your snack tray using a variety of red and green fruits and veggies such as broccoli, celery, and cherry tomatoes. Add in a variety of other colors as decoration and place a bowl of dip in the center of your wreath.
- Holiday Tortilla Chips – Use holiday or winter themed cookie cutters to cut out shaped pieces of whole grain tortillas. Spray or brush with olive oil before toasting to create festive chips. You can also brush with oil and sprinkle your tortilla shapes with cinnamon and sugar before toasting to create a sweet, cinnamon chip.
- Holiday Snack Mix – Mix together a variety of whole grain cereals, pretzels, dried fruit (preferably without added sugar), nuts, seeds, and chocolate pieces to create a fun, holiday trail mix. Let your helper portion the mix into snack bags and place somewhere convenient to grab on the go.
