An important note from 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit Coordinators and Committee:
Before the start of the awards banquet on Friday, November 12th it was brought to our attention there was an error in the spreadsheet for the 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Placings. The error has been corrected and the placings have been updated. Instead of taking the top five scores, as stated in the rules, all of the scores were totaled as they had been in 2019 and 2020. This error should have been caught sooner. We acknowledge the error caused hurt feelings and confusion. We are very sorry for the impact it may have had on the youth involved in the circuit. We will ensure that everyone will receive their corrected award. Although this error happened, we hope it does not take away from the growth and experience the youth gained from participating in the 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit this year.
The 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Committee began meeting in April to plan the Circuit. Just a little background on the rule changes. When I took over in 2019, Tiffannee Conrad, previous Circuit Coordinator, had encouraged the committee to change the rules to total points from all of the shows and not have a minimum number required. This change was supposed to make it easier for showmen after a hard show season in 2018 due to all of the hurricanes and shows that were canceled. We had a lot of showmen that were unable to complete the required minimum of shows and finish the Circuit. In 2019, we decided to total all of the points. At the end of 2019 and throughout the season, we received many complaints from parents saying that they preferred a minimum number of shows because it wasn’t fair to make people go to all of the shows to be more competitive on the Circuit. In 2020 before moving to the virtual Circuit, we had already decided to move back to the minimum and calculate half plus one of the number of possible shows. This is where the top 5 for heifers and goats and top 3 for sheep comes into play. Then because of COVID, we decided we still wanted to make opportunities available for our youth to continue and grow with their animals and thus we created the virtual Circuit. Because it was prompts and videos, all points were totaled. When the committee met in April 2021, we decided to move to taking the top 5 (goat & heifers) or 3 (sheep) scores for the Circuit. The Google Doc was worked on and edited by multiple folks remotely due to the fact that many offices remained closed and agents were working from home or limited days in the office. When the registration was published the wrong document was shared initially but was updated. The Eventbrite Registration said to use the Circuit Rules when inputting the animals that would be shown at all of the shows the person was registering for. At the time of the first registration on June 29, the rules stating that the top 5 or top 3 points would be added at the end of the Circuit were posted on the website. We did not change the rules at the banquet. It was brought to our attention from another person that the points were off because the spreadsheet formula had not been updated. We could not in good faith move forward with the incorrect placings when the correct rules stating that we would take the top 5 or top 3 points had been posted (as of June 29) before the start of the Circuit.
Welcome! We are so excited to offer in-person shows this year. Please read each county’s rules very carefully. If you are not wanting to join the circuit but would like to show in individual county shows there will be a separate registration sheet for that county. Please visit the link to those counties in which you wish to participate. We do understand that COVID-19 is still with us, please check in periodically with your 4-H agent or the 4-H agent in a show you plan on attending for the latest protocols for face coverings or other COVID-19 related restrictions.
The annual 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit is just around the corner. Once again, we are pleased to have Cape Fear Farm Credit and Carolina Farm Credit continue as our cosponsors.
