Pruning Fruit Trees and Small Fruit Plants

(Updated: Nov. 14, 2024, 8:54 a.m.)

Pruning is a yearly task that should be completed every year on fruit trees such as apples and peaches and small fruit plants such as blueberries, blackberries, and muscadines. Proper pruning promotes healthy growth, maintains the height or size of the tree or plant, removes unproductive growth, and in many cases increases fruit yield and quality.

There is a lot of uncertainty and questions centered around pruning fruiting plants, and it's a common topic people ask about. Questions like when is the right time to make the cuts? What parts should I prune off? Where is next year's fruit on the plant during the dormant season?

A topic so complex and shrouded in such ambiguity requires hands-on application to learn the proper way. On Saturday, February 22nd, 2025 the Randolph County Cooperative Extension will be hosting an all-day pruning workshop at Millstone Creek Orchards in Ramseur, NC. This workshop will teach you how to properly prune and train peach trees, apple trees, blueberry bushes, blackberry bushes, and muscadine vines. Attend this workshop and learn from the professions!
